A severe cold wave has intensified its hold on Lahore and parts of Punjab, enveloping the region in dense fog. The government is now considering measures to safeguard school-going students from the extreme weather conditions. The dense fog has significantly reduced visibility, causing disruptions in daily life and potentially affecting transportation and other services.
Caretaker Punjab Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi has acknowledged the severity of the cold snap and mentioned the possibility of extending the winter vacation for schools beyond January 9. However, he clarified that no final decision has been made yet. CM Naqvi stated that any further extension of the winter break would depend on the recommendations of the education department.

Earlier, the Punjab government had already declared additional holidays until January 9. Initially, the winter vacations were scheduled to end on December 31, but they were extended. The current consideration of further extension is prompted by the persistent cold weather and dense fog.
Simultaneously, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has also announced an extension of winter vacations. The provincial administration has extended the winter break until January 7, 2024. This decision is attributed to a training program for teachers related to elections, as well as the extreme cold prevailing in the region. The authorities aim to ensure the safety and well-being of students and educators in light of the challenging weather conditions.
