The Punjab government implemented a ban on pillion riding across the region as part of security measures preceding Ashura. Section 144 was enforced by the Punjab Home Department to bolster security throughout the province during Muharram, prohibiting the public display of firearms and ammunition.
Pillion riding on motorcycles will be prohibited from the 7th to the 10th of Muharram, except for elderly citizens, women, and security personnel. Section 144 will remain in effect from the 1st to the 10th of Muharram, also barring provocative speeches and slogans.

Further restrictions include prohibiting the construction of bunkers on rooftops and storing items like stones, bricks, bottles, or garbage along the routes of Muharram processions. The Punjab Home Department had previously issued stringent security guidelines for Muharram to ensure peace and safety during observances across the province. They anticipate 37,376 Majalis and 10,426 processions, each with detailed security plans.
Over 500 sensitive locations in Punjab have been identified, with Army and Rangers personnel deployed to maintain order and prevent any untoward incidents.
