Ricky Ponting Gives Advise to South Africa Before T20 World Cup Final

As South Africa prepares for the T20 World Cup 2024 final against India on Saturday, former Australian captain Ricky Ponting has shared crucial advice on handling big game pressure.

This is South Africa’s first World Cup final after eight failed semi-final attempts, the most recent being against Australia in the 2023 ODI World Cup.

Ponting, who led Australia to two World Cup titles (2003, 2007) and two Champions Trophies (2006, 2009), emphasized embracing the intensity of the occasion.

“Many teams say it’s just another game and try to downplay it, but it’s important to embrace the occasion for what it is,” Ponting said on ICC’s Digital Daily Show.

He advised the Proteas to enjoy the moment while maintaining consistent preparation. “These players haven’t been here before, so enjoy tonight and tomorrow. But ensure everything you do leading up is consistent,” he added.

Ponting praised the South African team, led by Aiden Markram, for their outstanding performance in the T20 World Cup 2024, noting their undefeated streak.

He suggested that the team should continue being themselves to succeed in the final. “They are undefeated so far, so they don’t need to change anything or try harder. They just need to be the best version of themselves as a team and give themselves the best chance,” he remarked. “If they do that, they will be hard to beat,” he concluded.

As the final approaches, South Africa aims to follow Ponting’s advice and bring their best performance in their historic quest for a World Cup title.
