Australian All-Rounder Marcus Stoinis Announces Retirement from ODIs

Australian all-rounder Marcus Stoinis has announced his retirement from One-Day Internationals (ODIs), bringing an end to his 71-match ODI career. Cricket Australia confirmed the 35-year-old’s decision on Thursday, leaving a gap in the team ahead of the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy.

Stoinis, who debuted in ODIs in 2015, accumulated 1,495 runs at an average of 26.69 and took 48 wickets at an average of 43.12. He was a key figure in Australia’s 2023 World Cup victory and was named ODI Player of the Year in 2019. While retiring from ODIs, Stoinis will remain available for T20 Internationals.

In a statement, Stoinis expressed his gratitude for representing Australia at the highest level, calling the experience a cherished journey. Australian coach Andrew McDonald commended Stoinis for his invaluable contributions over the years.

Stoinis’ retirement further complicates Australia’s team selection for the Champions Trophy, with all-rounder Mitchell Marsh ruled out due to a back injury, Cameron Green still recovering from surgery, and doubts surrounding captain Pat Cummins and bowler Josh Hazlewood’s fitness. Australia faces a selection challenge as they prepare for the tournament.
