The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is reportedly considering recalling former captain Babar Azam to the T20 squad due to fitness concerns over opener Fakhar Zaman. Media reports suggest that his potential return could take place during the upcoming tri-nation series and the Asia Cup 2025.
Fakhar Zaman suffered an injury during the recent T20I series against the West Indies, ruling him out of both the T20 and ODI series. The PCB has directed him to report to the National Cricket Academy in Lahore for rehabilitation.
His availability for the Asia Cup remains uncertain, prompting the board to explore alternative options for the batting lineup.
If Fakhar is unable to recover in time, Babar Azam is considered a strong candidate to rejoin the T20 side. His selection will largely depend on his performance in the ongoing ODI series against the West Indies.
A solid display with the bat could significantly boost his chances of making a T20 comeback.
Babar recently met with PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi during the second T20I against the West Indies. He was accompanied by fellow cricketers Mohammad Rizwan and Naseem Shah during the meeting, fueling further speculation about his potential return.
The final squad for the Asia Cup 2025 is expected to be announced in the second week of August. The tournament will begin on September 9, with Afghanistan facing Hong Kong in the opening Group B match.
Pakistan, placed in Group A alongside India, UAE, and Oman, will start their campaign against Oman on September 12. They will then face arch-rivals India on September 14, followed by their last group match against the UAE on September 17.
Fans are eagerly waiting to see if Babar Azam will make his much-anticipated return to Pakistan’s T20 squad ahead of the Asia Cup.
