India’s reluctance to send its team to Pakistan for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy has caused delays in the tournament’s progress, including the release of its schedule. India has proposed playing its matches in the UAE under a hybrid model rather than traveling to Pakistan. This stance has created a deadlock in negotiations between the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
In response, the PCB has suggested a “fusion” formula, wherein both nations would play their matches in the UAE for all ICC events held in either country over the next three years. While the BCCI initially resisted the idea, they have since agreed to most conditions, though disagreements on some issues have prolonged the resolution process.

Negotiations between the PCB, BCCI, and ICC officials have been ongoing behind the scenes. Salman Naseer, the former PCB Chief Operating Officer, and Sumair Syed, the current COO, have been in Dubai for several days, continuing discussions with the ICC. Recent developments suggest that the talks are progressing positively, with a potential announcement expected soon. The PCB is eager to resolve the matter quickly to move forward with ticketing and logistical preparations for the Champions Trophy.
The promotional campaign for the tournament has also sparked controversy. Indian broadcaster Star Sports released a promo for the event, but notably excluded Pakistan’s name as the host. Instead, the promo focused on highlights from the T20 World Cup, which India recently won, and did not feature Pakistan’s 2017 Champions Trophy victory or any clips of the Pakistani team. This omission disappointed many fans, who criticized both Star Sports and the PCB for failing to highlight Pakistan’s role as host and its achievements.
The promo’s exclusion of Pakistan has led to frustration among fans, with some calling for a boycott of the event and urging the PCB to take a firmer stance in promoting their hosting role and past successes in ICC events.
