Imad Wasim’s Place in Pakistan’s T20I Team: A Debate

Imad Wasim's Place in Pakistan's T20I Team: A Debate

Imad Wasim showcased an exceptional performance in the latter stages of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 9, leading Islamabad United to their third PSL title. Captained by Shadab Khan, Islamabad United utilized data science in team selection, marking an innovative approach in the league.

Imad’s turnaround came in Rawalpindi, where his quickfire 30 runs off 13 balls against Multan Sultans turned the tide in Islamabad United’s favor in a high-pressure chase of 229 runs. This innings marked a resurgence in his batting form.

The left-arm orthodox spinner also made significant contributions with the ball, delivering a lethal spell of 3 wickets for just 12 runs in 4 overs against Quetta Gladiators in the Eliminator 1, securing Islamabad United’s place in the potential semi-final.

In the crucial Eliminator 2, Imad played a pivotal role with the bat, scoring an unbeaten 59 runs at a healthy strike rate of 148, guiding Islamabad United to victory over Peshawar Zalmi and securing their spot in the Final.

Imad’s remarkable performance continued in the Final, where he became the first bowler to claim a 5-wicket haul in a PSL final, finishing with figures of 5 wickets for 23 runs and playing a significant role in Multan Sultans’ defeat.

Looking ahead, the question arises whether Imad will be recalled to the national white-ball side. With the upcoming challenge of the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup in West Indies and USA, Imad’s experience in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) since 2016, consistently representing Jamaica Tallawahs, could be valuable.

In CPL, Imad has showcased consistent performances with both bat and ball, highlighting his ability to excel in T20 cricket. Despite Pakistan’s recent T20I series loss against New Zealand, Imad’s potential inclusion in the national team remains a topic of discussion.

While Mohammad Nawaz has been preferred as the left-arm all-rounder in recent series, Imad’s past contributions and experience could earn him a recall. However, the selectors might also consider young talents like Mehran Mumtaz for the national squad, presenting a dilemma for the decision-makers.
