Najmul Hossain Shanto Steps Down as Bangladesh’s T20I Captain

Najmul Hossain Shanto has officially resigned as the captain of Bangladesh’s national T20I team, confirming widespread speculation. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has acknowledged the decision, which comes after Shanto had earlier hinted at stepping down following the home series against South Africa.

Initially, Shanto had intended to relinquish the T20I captaincy after the 2024 World Cup in the USA and West Indies. However, he reconsidered his leadership role across all formats and decided to step away sooner. Despite BCB’s acceptance of his resignation, there was a brief twist when BCB President Faruque Ahmed reinstated Shanto as captain for the ODI series against Afghanistan, only for an injury to disrupt his leadership during that series.

A senior BCB official stated, “Shanto finally informed us that he won’t continue as T20I captain, and we accepted it. Since there are no T20I matches at the moment, we have time to choose a new captain.”

While Shanto remains the captain for Bangladesh’s Test and ODI teams, barring injury, the BCB has chosen Litton Das as the new T20I captain. Litton, who recently led Bangladesh to a 3-0 series win over the West Indies, expressed his readiness to take on the role long-term, and he is expected to continue leading the team in upcoming series.
