Saim Ayub created a new record during Pakistan’s opening ODI against South Africa at Boland Park by becoming the youngest player to score a century against South Africa while chasing. The 22-year-old smashed 109 runs off 119 balls, breaking Brian Lara’s 1993 record. Lara had achieved this feat at 23 years and 297 days, while Ayub reached the milestone at 22 years of age.
Pakistan was chasing 240 runs after early setbacks with Abdullah Shafique, Mohammad Rizwan, Kamran Ghulam, and captain Babar Azam (23 off 38 balls) all falling cheaply. However, Saim Ayub partnered with Salman Ali Agha for a crucial 141-run stand for the fifth wicket. His knock, featuring 10 boundaries and a six, played a pivotal role in stabilizing the chase before he was dismissed by Kagiso Rabada.

Ayub’s century, his second in ODIs after his first one in Zimbabwe last month, also made him the youngest player to score an ODI century in South Africa while chasing, surpassing Quinton de Kock’s record (23 years and 48 days) from 2016. Additionally, Ayub is now the third youngest player to score an ODI century against South Africa, behind Ahmed Shehzad and Kane Williamson, who achieved their feats in South Africa.
In a heartfelt gesture, Salman Agha, who played a crucial supporting role with an unbeaten 82, handed over his “Man of the Match” award to Ayub, recognizing his match-winning contribution.
Pakistan reached the target with just one ball to spare, securing a three-wicket victory and a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. The second ODI is set to take place in Cape Town on December 20.
