Pakistan’s all-rounder Salman Ali Agha played a key role in his team’s victory over South Africa in the first ODI, but in a heartwarming gesture, he handed over his “Man of the Match” award to young opener Saim Ayub, recognizing his brilliant knock of 109 runs.
The match, held at Paarl, saw Pakistan chasing a target of 240 in what turned out to be a thrilling contest. South Africa had struggled initially, falling to 88 for 4 before Heinrich Klaasenβs 86, aided by partnerships with Aiden Markram and Marco Jansen, pushed the hosts to a competitive total. Agha’s four-wicket haul was pivotal in the middle overs, dismantling South Africa’s lower order.

Saim Ayubβs century was the cornerstone of Pakistan’s chase. His 109, scored off 112 balls and laced with 10 boundaries and two sixes, laid the foundation for the successful pursuit of the target. Agha, who also played a significant role with the bat, remained unbeaten on 82, hitting four fours and two sixes.
Though Agha was named “Man of the Match” for his all-round performance, he made the touching decision to give the award to Ayub, acknowledging the young player’s critical contribution.
βHis knock set up the game for us,β Agha said, explaining his gesture. βIf he hadnβt played like that, we wouldnβt have won. We were behind, but he scored a hundred, and it was an amazing feat. Hence, he deserves the award.β
Both Agha and Ayub shared a moment of camaraderie after the match, posing together with the award. Aghaβs gesture was also lauded by Pakistan’s captain, Muhammad Rizwan, who praised him for boosting the teamβs spirit. βSalmanβs gesture really lifts the morale of the team,β Rizwan noted.
Pakistanβs victory gives them a 1-0 lead in the three-match series, with the second ODI scheduled for Thursday.
