Saud Shakeel Replaces Abdullah Shafique in World Cup Squad

Saud Shakeel Replaces Abdullah Shafique in World Cup Squad

Saud Shakeel appears to be a strong contender for a spot in Pakistan’s 15-member squad for the 2023 ICC World Cup.

Pakistan included Shakeel in their 17-member Asia Cup squad during the recent ODI series against Afghanistan, leading to the exclusion of Tayyab Tahir. Shakeel’s proficiency in handling spin is seen as an advantage, considering that Pakistan will be playing on spin-friendly pitches in India.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) must finalize their World Cup squad and submit the names to the International Cricket Council (ICC) by the September 5 deadline. Consequently, it is likely that two members from the current Asia Cup squad will not make the final cut.

Following careful discussions between the selectors and team management, Abdullah Shafique may find himself excluded from the World Cup squad. There is also consideration to leave out Faheem Ashraf, as Mohammad Wasim Jnr is already part of the squad as a backup fast bowler who can contribute with useful runs down the order.

It’s important to note that adjustments to the squad can still be made until September 28th. However, any changes beyond that date will require approval from the International Cricket Council (ICC).

Pakistan’s provisional 15-member squad is expected to include players like Babar Azam (captain), Shadab Khan (vice-captain), Fakhar Zaman, Haris Rauf, Iftikhar Ahmed, Imam-ul-Haq, Mohammad Haris (wk), Mohammad Nawaz, Mohammad Rizwan (wk), Mohammad Wasim Jnr, Naseem Shah, Salman Ali Agha, Saud Shakeel, Shaheen Afridi, and Usama Mir.
