Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has approved a major healthcare expansion plan that includes the recruitment of 40,000 doctors and allied health professionals across the province. The initiative aims to improve medical facilities, treatment services, and healthcare access for citizens.
The provincial government said it has already hired thousands of medical and support workers. Further recruitment is planned to reduce staff shortages and strengthen healthcare delivery in districts.
Under the new healthcare plan, every district in Punjab will receive a new CT scan machine. The government also plans to establish telemedicine centres where patients can consult doctors through video calls.
These centres will help patients receive medical advice for seasonal illnesses and common health issues. They will also connect patients with hospital departments, laboratories, and other required healthcare services.
The government will upgrade 300 Maryam Nawaz Hospitals, previously known as Rural Health Centres, into fully equipped hospitals. The upgrade aims to provide better medical facilities at the local level.
As part of the healthcare expansion, Punjab has already recruited 2,524 doctors, 2,482 women medical officers, 408 consultants, and 32 cardiologists. Hospitals have also received 7,572 lady health visitors and 5,048 support staff.
The upcoming recruitment drive will create additional Jobs in the healthcare sector while supporting hospitals facing workforce shortages. Officials said the initiative is focused on improving patient care and expanding medical services across Punjab.
The government is also introducing digital medical boxes for Clinics on Wheels. These systems will allow medical teams to conduct ultrasound, blood sugar, CBC, and ECG tests through a single device.
Smart ultrasound machines connected through mobile networks and teleconferencing cameras will also be introduced. These facilities will help patients access specialist consultations in areas with limited healthcare resources.
A new hospital performance programme has also been announced. Under this initiative, a monthly “Hospital of the Month” award will recognise hospitals providing improved services.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has also directed action against poor performance. Four hospitals’ medical superintendents were ordered to be replaced over reported negligence.
Officials have further been instructed to improve cleanliness and parking facilities at district and tehsil headquarters hospitals. The government said the broader plan will focus on better healthcare management and improved public services.
