‘Pride Match’ at 2026 World Cup to Feature Egypt and Iran, where Homosexuality is illegal

‘Pride Match’ at 2026 World Cup to Feature Egypt and Iran, where Homosexuality is illegal

Seattle’s local organizing committee has confirmed it will host an LGBTQ+ “Pride Match” during the 2026 World Cup, BBC reported. The event will take place on June 26 at Lumen Field.

The match will feature Egypt and Iran, two countries where homosexuality is illegal and punishable by severe laws. Iranian law allows the death penalty for same-sex relations, while Egyptian authorities frequently use morality laws to restrict LGBTQ+ rights.

The Pride Match was planned as part of Seattle’s official Pride weekend, celebrating the LGBTQ+ community. Organizers had scheduled the event before knowing which teams would play in the fixture. After Friday’s 2026 World Cup draw, the Group G match was set between Egypt and Iran.

The local committee emphasized that the Pride celebration is entirely independent and not coordinated with FIFA. Artists across Washington state have been invited to create artwork celebrating LGBTQ+ people. These pieces will be displayed around the stadium and throughout Seattle during the match.

A spokesperson from the Seattle Pride Match Advisory Committee said, “The Pride Match was scheduled to celebrate Pride events in Seattle and across the country. Soccer can unite people across borders, cultures, and beliefs. We are honoured to host this match as part of a global football community.”

The committee stressed its commitment to respect, dignity, and unity for all fans, noting that the celebration will continue as planned despite potential controversies.

Similar issues occurred during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where laws criminalizing same-sex relationships created tension. FIFA warned players against wearing the OneLove armband supporting LGBTQ+ rights, leading several teams, including England and Wales, to abandon the initiative.

Seattle organizers insist that the 2026 World Cup Pride Match is a platform to celebrate diversity and inclusivity in football while highlighting the importance of human rights for LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.
