The Agnelli family has confirmed that it has no plans to sell its shares in Juventus Football Club, despite growing speculation following Tether’s recent investment. Family head John Elkann, who also serves as CEO of Exor—the holding company controlling Juventus—said the family remains “fully committed” to the Italian football giant.
Speaking to Reuters, Elkann stated that while the Agnelli family has no intention of selling its stake, it remains open to working with new investors who share the same passion and goals for the club. “We remain proud to have been Juventus’ controlling shareholder for over a century,” Elkann said.
Tether Becomes Juventus’ Second-Largest Shareholder
The comments came after cryptocurrency company Tether acquired more than 10% of Juventus shares, becoming the club’s second-largest shareholder after Exor, which holds around 65%. Tether has proposed two board members—Francesco Garino and Zachary Lyons—who will be voted on during the upcoming shareholder meeting.
Elkann welcomed the idea of collaboration, saying Exor is “open to constructive ideas from all stakeholders” that could help strengthen the club’s operations and performance.
Challenges On and Off the Field
Juventus, Italy’s most successful football club, has faced difficulties both on and off the pitch in recent years. After winning their ninth straight Serie A title in 2020, the team has struggled to reclaim top form. Recently, former Italy coach Luciano Spalletti was appointed as head coach following the dismissal of Igor Tudor.
Elkann reaffirmed that the Agnelli family continues to support the new board and management team, emphasizing that the club’s focus remains on achieving sporting excellence while maintaining financial discipline.
A Century-Long Legacy
The Agnelli family’s relationship with Juventus dates back to 1923, when Edoardo Agnelli first became chairman. Since then, the family has remained closely tied to the club’s identity and success. While some fans have questioned the leadership’s direction after Andrea Agnelli’s departure in 2022, Elkann’s statement reinforces the enduring connection between the Agnellis and Juventus.
