Pakistanβs star batter Babar Azam reached a major milestone in the ongoing first Test against South Africa at the Gaddafi Stadium on Sunday. The stylish right-hander became the first Asian batter to score 3,000 runs in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC), marking a new chapter in his remarkable career.
Babar needed just two runs to achieve the feat before the start of the match. He reached the landmark in classic fashion, hitting a beautiful boundary off the fourth ball of the 48th over. With this, Babar Azam also became the first Pakistani and the eighth overall player to cross 3,000 runs in the WTC.
According to ICC statistics, Joe Root leads the list with 6,080 runs, followed by Steve Smith (4,278) and Marnus Labuschagne (4,225). Babar stands eighth with 3,021 runs in 37 matches. His WTC record includes 18 fifties and eight centuries, reflecting his consistency across formats.
Despite his strong start, Babar was dismissed for 23 after being trapped lbw by Prenelan Subrayen. His 48-ball knock featured five elegant boundaries.
Among Asian batters, Babar Azam tops the WTC charts with 3,021 runs. Indiaβs Shubman Gill follows with 2,826 runs, while Rishabh Pant (2,731), Rohit Sharma (2,716), Dimuth Karunaratne (2,642), and Virat Kohli (2,617) complete the top six.
Gill has scored 10 centuries and eight fifties in 39 matches, averaging 43.47. Pant, meanwhile, averages 43.34 with six centuries and 16 half-centuries.
Babarβs latest achievement adds to his growing list of records, reinforcing his position as one of Pakistanβs finest Test batters. His milestone not only reflects personal excellence but also highlights his contribution to Pakistanβs rise in the World Test Championship.
