Thousands of fans erupted in anger at an India stadium after football superstar Lionel Messi left the venue earlier than expected.
Messi, 38, is on a three-day โGOAT Tourโ of India. He arrived in West Bengal on Saturday and was greeted by fans chanting his name. Later, thousands of supporters wearing Messi jerseys and waving Argentine flags filled Salt Lake stadium in Kolkata.
Heavy security made it difficult for fans to see Messi. When he left early, some spectators broke barricades, stormed the pitch, and vandalized banners and tents. Many paid over $100 for tickets. Others tore out stadium seats and threw water bottles onto the track.
โFor me, to watch Messi is a pleasure, a dream. But I missed the chance because of the mismanagement in the stadium,โ said businessman Nabin Chatterjee, 37. Another fan added that people spent โa monthโs salaryโ to see Messi live.
Before the chaos, Messi unveiled a 21-metre (70-foot) statue showing him holding the World Cup. He was also expected to play a short exhibition game at the India stadium, which did not happen due to the early exit.
State Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed shock at the incident. She apologized to Messi and all sports fans, stating that a probe has been ordered into the mismanagement.
Messi will continue his tour in Hyderabad, Mumbai, and New Delhi. His schedule may include a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The Argentina and Inter Miami star recently won his second consecutive Major League Soccer Most Valuable Player award. He led Inter Miami to the MLS title and topped the league in goals. Messi is also preparing to defend Argentinaโs World Cup title in June-July in North America.
The chaotic events at the India stadium highlight the challenges of managing large crowds for global sports stars. Fans remain eager to see Messi, despite the disruptions.
