England Shatter Records with 342-Run Thrashing of South Africa in ODI Finale

England Shatter Records with 342-Run Thrashing of South Africa in ODI Finale

South Africa faced a humiliating defeat in Southampton as England secured the biggest win in One-Day International history. The visitors were bowled out for just 72 while chasing a massive target of 415 runs.

The 342-run victory surpassed India’s 317-run win over Sri Lanka in 2023, setting a new global record. It was also a clean sweep for England, who won the three-match ODI series 3-0. Their previous biggest win had been a 242-run triumph over Australia in 2018.

Jofra Archer starred with the ball, taking 4 for 18 in nine overs. His fiery spell dismantled South Africa’s top order, removing four of the first five batters. Adil Rashid added three more wickets to seal the rout.

Earlier, England dominated with the bat, scoring 414 for 5 in their 50 overs. Jacob Bethell hit his maiden ODI century, smashing 110 off 82 balls with 13 fours and three sixes. Joe Root also impressed with a fluent 100, while Jos Buttler remained unbeaten on 62. Opener Jamie Smith contributed 62 in a strong top-order display.

Bethell’s innings stood out as a defining moment for the 21-year-old, who was promoted to number four in the batting lineup. His knock followed mixed performances in Test cricket but highlighted his growing potential in limited-overs matches.

South Africa’s collapse began early, losing three wickets within the first three overs. Archer’s pace and movement proved too much, while Brydon Carse also struck twice to deepen the crisis. With captain Temba Bavuma unable to bat due to injury, the visitors were dismissed in just 20.5 overs.

This crushing defeat marked South Africa’s second-lowest total in ODI cricket. The teams will now shift focus to the upcoming T20 series, where South Africa will look to bounce back after this record-breaking setback.
