FIFA President Gianni Infantino has said that football cannot directly solve conflict. However, he believes the sport carries a strong message of peace and unity.
Infantino was speaking during a FIFA Council meeting in Zurich. He admitted that world tensions, including the ongoing war in Gaza, have created pressure on FIFA to act. But he stressed that footballβs role is limited.
βFootball cannot solve conflict,β Infantino said, adding that the game should instead focus on promoting understanding. He explained that the real power of football lies in its ability to bring people together, across cultures and nations.
The FIFA President also expressed sympathy for those suffering in conflicts worldwide. He said that while FIFA cannot end wars, it can use its influence to highlight values such as respect, solidarity, and peace.
Infantino also addressed growing calls for Israelβs suspension from international football due to the Gaza war. He noted that any such decision must be taken with care and through consensus with FIFAβs confederations. He made it clear that FIFAβs role is not political but humanitarian and cultural.
FIFA Vice President Victor Montagliani added that certain decisions, such as those involving European competitions, fall under UEFAβs jurisdiction. This shows that many issues go beyond FIFAβs direct control.
Infantinoβs statement comes at a time when fans, governments, and human rights groups are urging stronger action from football authorities. Some want FIFA to take a clear stand on political crises. But Infantino repeated that footballβs biggest strength is unity, not division.
By sending a message of peace, FIFA hopes to show that even though football cannot solve conflict, it can help inspire dialogue and hope for a better future.
