Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong has signed a new contract that will keep him at the club until 2029, the Spanish champions confirmed on Wednesday.
The 28-year-old Dutch international, who joined Barcelona from Ajax in 2019, is currently in his seventh season with the Catalan giants. During his time at the club, Frenkie de Jong has won two La Liga titles and lifted the Copa del Rey twice, becoming a key figure in the team’s midfield.
Although his form dipped at times, De Jong rediscovered his rhythm under coach Hansi Flick last season, forming a strong partnership with Pedri Gonzalez in the center of the pitch. His consistent performances have made him one of Barcelona’s most reliable players.
According to Spanish media, De Jong — one of the club’s highest earners — agreed to a pay cut as part of his new deal, which takes effect from the 2026/27 season. The move is seen as a gesture of commitment amid Barcelona’s ongoing financial challenges.
In a statement, the club announced: “The midfielder Frenkie de Jong has extended his deal with FC Barcelona until 2029, as on Wednesday the Dutchman signed his new contract alongside president Joan Laporta in the Club’s head offices.”
De Jong signed the contract in the presence of President Joan Laporta, First Vice President Rafael Yuste, and Sporting Director Deco. Football coordinator Bojan Krkic and other members of the club’s sporting commission also attended the signing ceremony.
The extension confirms Barcelona’s long-term faith in De Jong, who has become a crucial part of the team’s plans for the future. His leadership, versatility, and technical quality continue to make him one of the most valuable midfielders in Europe.
With this new deal, Frenkie de Jong aims to add more trophies to his name as Barcelona continue their pursuit of domestic and European success under Flick’s management.
