Mohammad Hafeez Says Dropping Shaheen Shah Afridi As T20 Captain Was A Mistake

Mohammad Hafeez Says Dropping Shaheen Shah Afridi As T20 Captain Was A Mistake

Former Pakistan cricket captain Mohammad Hafeez has sharply criticized recent leadership decisions in the national T20 side, particularly the removal of Shaheen Shah Afridi as captain. Speaking on a television program, Hafeez said the quick removal disrupted team stability and long-term planning.

Hafeez explained that Afridi was appointed captain barely a year ago, and taking him out of the role so soon was unfair. “Constant changes at the top disturb team confidence and planning,” he said. He warned that frequent leadership shifts could harm Pakistan cricket’s performance in major tournaments.

He also criticized the decision to reinstate Babar Azam as T20 captain, calling it another example of inconsistent decision-making. Hafeez said, “We must stop the habit of changing captains after every World Cup. Whatever decision is made now, the board should stand by it and move forward with clarity.”

The former all-rounder also spoke about team selection and batting positions. He highlighted that asking Salman Ali Agha to bat at number three does not suit his strengths. Hafeez suggested that Salman should bat at number four, where he can perform better against spin bowling.

“He plays spin exceptionally well, though he struggles against high-quality pace. If he remains in the team, he should bat at number four rather than number three,” Hafeez advised.

Hafeez stressed that these constant changes, including the removal of Afridi and frequent captaincy shifts, are unfair to Pakistan cricket. He called for stability, defined roles, and long-term thinking to help rebuild confidence in the T20 side.

According to Hafeez, establishing consistent leadership and a clear batting order is essential for Pakistan’s success in upcoming T20 tournaments. He emphasized that decisions should be made with foresight, ensuring players can focus on performance rather than uncertainty over leadership.

The former captain’s comments highlight ongoing concerns about decision-making within Pakistan cricket. Analysts say that avoiding abrupt removal of leaders and providing stability could significantly improve team morale and performance in the short and long term.
