ICC World Cup 2027 is set to return to Africa for the first time in nearly 25 years, with South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia confirmed as co-hosts of the prestigious tournament.
According to media reports, the event is expected to take place from October 4 to November 21, 2027. The proposed schedule was recently approved during an International Cricket Council (ICC) board meeting in Ahmedabad. Final approval is expected at the ICC Annual General Meeting scheduled for next month in Edinburgh.
South Africa is expected to host the majority of the matches. Reports suggest that around 41 of the tournamentโs 54 games will be played across eight venues in the country. Zimbabwe is likely to stage between eight and ten matches, while Namibia is expected to host three fixtures.
The upcoming ICC World Cup will mark a significant moment for African cricket. The continent last hosted the Menโs ODI World Cup in 2003, when South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Kenya jointly organized the event. The return of the tournament is expected to boost cricketโs popularity across the region and provide fans with an opportunity to witness world-class cricket on home soil.
One of the biggest changes in the 2027 edition will be the expansion of the competition. The tournament will feature 14 teams, compared to the previous two editions, which included only 10 teams. Cricket officials believe the larger format will offer more opportunities for emerging nations to compete at the highest level.
Under the proposed structure, the 14 participating teams will be divided into two groups of seven. The top three teams from each group will advance to the Super Six stage. From there, the leading teams will battle for places in the knockout rounds and ultimately the final.
As full ICC members, South Africa and Zimbabwe are expected to qualify automatically for the tournament. Namibia, however, will need to progress through the qualification process to secure a place in the competition.
