DUBAI – India will host the inaugural Women’s Champions Trophy in 2027, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced.
The tournament is scheduled to take place from February 14 to 28, 2027. Matches will be played in Mumbai and Vadodara.
Six teams will compete in the first edition of the tournament. They include Australia, England, India, New Zealand, South Africa and Sri Lanka.
The participating teams were selected according to the Women’s T20I rankings. The ICC set July 6 as the qualification cut-off date for the tournament.
India’s selection as host marks an important development for women’s international cricket. The event will bring six leading teams together for the inaugural competition.
Sri Lanka was initially awarded the hosting rights for the Women’s Champions Trophy. However, the country still needs to complete certain reforms required under ICC guidelines.
The hosting decision was subsequently changed, with India named as the new host. The move follows discussions about the reforms required for Sri Lanka to meet ICC standards.
Reports said decisions regarding these reforms were made during the ICC Annual Conference. The conference was held in July this year.
The tournament will be staged across two Indian cities. Mumbai and Vadodara will host matches during the competition.
The six participating teams represent some of the strongest sides in women’s cricket. Australia, England, India, New Zealand, South Africa and Sri Lanka secured their places through the ranking-based qualification process.
The ranking system provided the basis for selecting the teams. The July 6 cut-off date was used to determine the final participants.
The ICC’s announcement provides teams with several months to prepare for the tournament. Players and coaching staff can now plan their preparations around the February schedule.
The inaugural Women’s Champions Trophy is expected to add another major event to the international women’s cricket calendar. Its launch also reflects the continued expansion of women’s cricket.
