Norwegian FA President Calls for Israel Suspension from International Competitions

FA

The president of Norway’s Football Federation has called for Israel to be suspended from international football. The comments come ahead of an important UEFA meeting where the issue will be discussed.

Lise Klaveness, who also sits on UEFA’s executive committee, said that sanctions are necessary. She explained that Israel should face the same treatment that was given to Russia when it was banned after the Ukraine conflict. According to her, football cannot be separate from international law and rules.

Despite her strong stance, Klaveness confirmed that Norway will not boycott its upcoming match against Israel. The two nations are scheduled to meet in Oslo on October 11 in a World Cup qualifier. She said that a boycott would only damage Norway and could help Israel instead. For her, a collective decision from UEFA is the only effective solution.

Her comments follow a recent United Nations report accusing Israel of committing genocide in Gaza. Israel denies those charges, but the report has increased calls for action. Klaveness said that it is difficult to play against a nation linked to such serious allegations, especially when the flag and anthem are part of the game.

UEFA is now expected to hold an emergency vote on Israel’s future in European competitions. The decision will be closely watched around the world, as it could have major consequences for football and politics.

The issue has sparked debate among fans and officials. Some believe sport should remain neutral, while others argue that football cannot ignore human rights concerns. For now, Norway’s FA president has made her position clear. She wants Israel suspended from international competitions until a final decision is reached on the allegations.
