Hockey players from Pakistanβs national team have strongly opposed a proposal offering them only Rs400 as a daily allowance. They called the amount humiliating and a clear disregard for their struggles.
βIt feels like rubbing salt on our wounds,β said the hockey players, noting that Rs400 does not even match a laborerβs daily wage. They stressed that the proposal has left them deeply disheartened.
Team members highlighted that allowances are often delayed and employment opportunities remain limited. βIf this continues, we will be forced to leave hockey. The country has given us everything, but this figure really hurt us,β they said.
Players also revealed that their households are suffering due to irregular payments. βOur stoves are going cold at home, and yet there are issues with our allowances,β they explained.
Responding to criticism, Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) Secretary Rana Mujahid clarified that the Rs400 figure was suggested by the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB). βThe federation pays 100 dollars per day as allowance. If the players are not satisfied with 100 dollars, how can they play for Rs400?β he stated.
Reports indicate that each player is owed around Rs500,000 for international and domestic events. These include unpaid allowances from the FIH Nations Cup and two training camps in Islamabad. With no central contracts or fixed salaries, players rely heavily on these allowances as their main income.
Despite financial troubles, Pakistan hockey secured a historic opportunity. The International Hockey Federation (FIH) confirmed Pakistanβs participation in the 2025-26 FIH Hockey Pro League for the first time. The slot was earned after Pakistan finished as runners-up in the Nations Cup.
To support the team, the federal government approved a Rs25 crore grant. Officials added that another Rs10 crore will be raised through sponsorships.
Senior player Imad Butt urged the federation to adopt long-term solutions. βThe development of hockey cannot depend only on government funds. The PHF must generate its own resources,β he said.
Tournament schedules and venues will be announced later by the FIH.
