PHF President Tariq Bugti Resigns After Hockey National Team Ban Controversy

PHF President Tariq Bugti Resigns After Hockey National Team Ban Controversy

LAHORE โ€“ Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) president Tariq Bugti has announced his resignation following a two-year ban imposed on national team captain Amad Butt. The decision came after videos showing alleged mistreatment of players during the Australia tour went viral online.

The ban prevents Amad Butt from participating in any domestic or international competitions for two years. Speaking at a press conference in Lahore, the PHF president said he had submitted his resignation to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and took full responsibility for the situation.

Bugti criticized the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) for delays in funding, which he said affected the Australia tour. According to him, the PHF lacked sufficient resources to manage the tour effectively, and payments for hotel bookings were delayed for over two months despite repeated requests.

The PHF president also urged the Prime Minister and Field Marshal Asim Munir to form a committee to investigate the mishandling of the Pro League. He emphasized the need to hold accountable those responsible for mismanagement.

Despite the controversy, Bugti highlighted positive developments for Pakistan hockey. Under his tenure, the teamโ€™s world ranking improved from 18th to 13th, marking a significant achievement. He praised the players for their performance, even amid administrative challenges.

Prime Ministerโ€™s advisor Rana Sanaullah confirmed that an inquiry had been completed by the PSB into the issues surrounding the Australia tour. The results of the investigation are expected to guide reforms and ensure better management of future international tours.

Bugtiโ€™s resignation comes at a critical time for Pakistan hockey, as the federation faces scrutiny over administrative and financial lapses. The PHF presidentโ€™s departure leaves questions about the leadership and future direction of the national hockey team.
