T20 World Cup warm-up match between Pakistan and Ireland was abandoned due to heavy rain in Colombo, officials confirmed on Monday. The game could not even reach the toss because of poor ground conditions.
The fixture was scheduled to be played in Sri Lanka’s capital as part of both teams’ T20 World Cup preparations. However, continuous rainfall in the morning left large parts of the outfield wet and unsafe for play.
Match officials carried out several inspections during the day. They hoped the conditions would improve. But the rain-affected ground did not dry in time. Water remained on different areas of the field, making it impossible to start the match.
As a result, the officials decided to abandon the game without a single ball being bowled. The decision was taken after it became clear that the outfield would not be ready. Safety concerns for players were also considered before calling off the contest.
The abandoned match was part of Pakistan’s build-up to the T20 World Cup. Warm-up games are important because they help teams adjust to conditions and finalize their playing combinations. However, unpredictable weather can often disrupt such plans.
Pakistan is now focusing on its opening match of the T20 World Cup. The team is scheduled to face the Netherlands on 7 February. The match will mark the start of Pakistan’s campaign in the global tournament.
No announcement was made about rescheduling the abandoned fixture. Warm-up matches usually follow tight schedules. Changes depend on weather conditions and ground availability.

Despite the setback, Pakistan will continue its training sessions ahead of the T20 World Cup. The team management hopes the players will be ready and fully prepared for the tournament opener.
