Former Indian captain Rohit Sharma has achieved a major career milestone, becoming the No.1 ranked ODI batter in the world for the first time. The latest ICC Men’s Rankings, released on Wednesday, confirm his rise to the top after a brilliant performance against Australia in Sydney.
Rohit Sharma climbed two spots to claim the top position following his match-winning century in the final ODI. His unbeaten 113 runs off 93 balls, including 13 boundaries and three sixes, powered India to a dominant nine-wicket victory.
This remarkable innings helped him surpass Afghanistan’s Ibrahim Zadran and teammate Shubman Gill in the ICC Men’s Batting Rankings. For the 38-year-old veteran, this is a historic achievement after nearly a decade of consistent performances that kept him among the world’s top 10 batters.
The Indian skipper’s latest success adds another highlight to his decorated international career, cementing his place among the greatest ODI players of his generation. Cricket analysts have praised Rohit for his composure, leadership, and ability to perform under pressure, especially in high-stakes matches.
Rohit Sharma wasn’t the only Indian player to shine in the rankings update. Left-arm spinner Axar Patel moved up six places to reach 31st among ODI bowlers and also rose to eighth among all-rounders, just behind Afghanistan’s Azmatullah Omarzai.
Elsewhere in the rankings, New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner climbed to fourth among ODI bowlers, while Australia’s Josh Hazlewood advanced two spots to eighth. England’s Harry Brook also made significant progress, jumping 23 places to 25th among ODI batters after a series of consistent performances.
