Shadab Khan Back in Team, But Sufyan And Maaz Overlooked, Says Former Captain

The inclusion of veteran all-rounder Shadab Khan for Pakistan’s upcoming T20 series against Sri Lanka has become a trending topic on social media. Fans and cricket analysts expressed surprise at his selection, highlighting his absence from recent matches.

Former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif commented on the squad announcement via X, noting that while Shadab Khan’s return is welcome, some domestic performers like Maaz Sadaqat and Sufyan Muqeem were overlooked. His post sparked debates about the team’s selection strategy.

Shadab Khan is currently playing in the Big Bash League (BBL), where he has had limited batting opportunities. His selection for the national side comes after a recovery from shoulder surgery, making Shadab Khan’s return a significant boost for Pakistan’s T20 squad.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced a 15-member squad for the January 2026 series. Salman Ali Agha will captain the team, while young wicketkeeper-batter Khawaja Mohammad Nafay earned his maiden call-up. Notably, fast bowler Haris Rauf was left out of the squad.

Other squad members include Abdul Samad, Abrar Ahmed, Faheem Ashraf, Fakhar Zaman, Mohammad Nawaz, Salman Mirza, Mohammad Wasim Jr, Naseem Shah, Sahibzada Farhan, Saim Ayub, Usman Khan, and Usman Tariq. The team will depart for Sri Lanka in phases on January 4 and 5.

Pakistan and Sri Lanka will play a three-match T20I series in Dambulla on January 7, 9, and 11. This series serves as a precursor to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka. Teams must submit preliminary squads by January 7, with changes permitted under ICC approval if made within one week of the tournament start.

Fans and analysts are closely watching Shadab Khan’s return as it adds experience and depth to Pakistan’s T20 side. His performance in the series will likely influence squad selections for the T20 World Cup, where Pakistan faces Group A opponents India, the USA, the Netherlands, and Namibia.

The excitement around Shadab Khan’s return underscores his value as a seasoned all-rounder and highlights the anticipation surrounding Pakistan’s preparations for both the Sri Lanka series and the upcoming World Cup.
