Former Pakistan cricketer Basit Ali has predicted that Shaheen Shah Afridi’s inclusion could be crucial in Pakistan’s Super Eight clash against England at the T20 World Cup 2026 in Kandy.
Pakistan needs a win after their first match against New Zealand was washed out. A defeat could allow England, who bowled Sri Lanka out for just 95 runs, to secure a semifinal spot early.
Basit Ali, speaking on Har Lamha Purjosh, said his assessment focused on England’s opening pair, Phil Salt and Jos Buttler. He suggested that Shaheen Shah Afridi’s pace and skill could be used strategically against them.
“I think Shaheen Shah Afridi could replace Faheem Ashraf in the match against England,” Basit Ali said. He also mentioned that Fakhar Zaman is expected to play in the upcoming game.
Basit Ali urged Pakistan to adjust their strategy, noting that England bowlers Will Jacks, Liam Dawson, and Adil Rashid have been bowling effectively. He recommended Babar Azam open the innings instead of Saim Ayub to allow two left-handers in the middle order.
Meanwhile, former wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal warned that England’s primary threats are Jofra Archer and Adil Rashid. He stressed that Pakistan must approach these bowlers carefully while targeting the other members of the attack.
Akmal added that if Pakistan bats first, they could post a total of around 170, which should be competitive given England’s current form.
Selectors and the coaching staff now face a critical decision, balancing experience and form. Experts believe Shaheen Shah Afridi’s inclusion could provide Pakistan with the extra edge needed against England’s strong lineup.
