Spain Beats Bulgaria 3-0 in World Cup Qualifier

spain

The team kicked off their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification campaign with a commanding 3-0 victory over Bulgaria on September 4, 2025, at the Vasil Levski National Stadium in Sofia. The win places Spain at the top of Group E, ahead of Turkey, who also secured a 3-2 win over Georgia.

Spain set the tone early with Mikel Oyarzabal opening the scoring in the 5th minute, capitalizing on a precise pass from MartΓn Zubimendi. Marc Cucurella doubled the lead in the 30th minute with a powerful strike following a partial clearance. Just eight minutes later, Mikel Merino sealed the first-half dominance with a glancing header from a corner delivered by Lamine Yamal.

Defensively, the team was resolute, with Dean Huijsen making a notable impact. Starting at center-back, Huijsen completed 94% of his 104 passes, made four clearances, and contributed two shots, showcasing his potential as a future defensive cornerstone for both club and country. Dani Carvajal also made a brief appearance off the bench, completing all 25 of his passes, reinforcing Spain’s defensive stability.

Barcelona’s young star, Lamine Yamal, who provided the assist for Merino’s goal, appeared to suffer a back issue during the match. He was substituted in the 78th minute and was seen massaging his lower back, raising concerns for both Spain and Barcelona.

Spain’s next World Cup qualifier is an away match against Turkey on September 7, 2025. With this dominant performance, Spain aims to continue their strong start and secure a direct qualification spot for the 2026 World Cup.
