The rift between Umar Akmal and Waqar Younis has resurfaced once again, with the former Pakistan batter accusing his ex-coach of playing a major role in ending his international career. The explosive remarks came during Umarβs recent appearance on a local television talk show, where he opened up about the struggles and politics that he believes derailed his cricket journey.
Umar Akmal claimed that internal politics and personal grudges within the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) have continued to block his return to both domestic cricket and the Pakistan Super League (PSL). βSome people sitting in the PCB donβt want me or Kamran [Akmal] to play again. Thatβs why weβre not being picked in the PSL either,β he said.
The 35-year-old added that despite being fit and ready to play, he has been excluded from domestic tournaments, which prevents PSL franchises from assessing his current form.
Turning his criticism toward Waqar Younis, Umar accused the former fast bowler of deliberately sabotaging his career out of jealousy. βWaqar Younis ruined my career, not because of performance, but because of jealousy. He couldnβt tolerate my fame, my earnings, or my lifestyle,β Umar alleged.
He further claimed that Waqar had issues with other senior players as well. βHe didnβt just target me. There were others too, but I donβt want to name them right now,β Umar said, adding that he has evidence to back his claims, which he plans to reveal later.
This isnβt the first time Umar Akmal has publicly criticized Waqar Younis. The two have had a tense relationship since Waqarβs coaching stints between 2010 and 2016, marked by repeated conflicts over discipline and team selection.
The latest accusations have reignited debate among cricket fans about how Pakistan cricket handles its talented yet controversial players. While some view Umar Akmal as a wasted talent, others believe he was unfairly sidelined due to internal politics.
