Former Pakistan captain Younis Khan has criticised reports suggesting Pakistani players could face fines of Rs5 million each after the team’s disappointing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup campaign.
According to sources, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is considering imposing fines on players due to the team’s underperformance. Reacting to these reports, Younis said the decision would be unfair to the players.
Speaking to media in Karachi, Younis highlighted that Pakistan has a strong domestic cricket pool. He mentioned players like Sahibzada Farhan, whose performances should inspire and motivate others at the national level.
“If the news about the Rs5 million fine is true, then it is clearly unfair to the players,” Younis said. He added that the squad should speak up against such measures.
The former captain recalled a similar situation after the ICC Cricket World Cup under Rashid Latif’s leadership. Back then, players faced cuts in allowances and match fees, prompting a strong reaction from the team.
Younis stressed that talented players must be given opportunities to improve and adapt. “Cricket has changed worldwide. Players now need to build innings, bat through overs, and contribute beyond just hitting boundaries,” he said.
Pakistan’s poor showing in the T20 World Cup ended on Saturday when the team failed to reach the semi-finals. The campaign exposed several weaknesses in both batting and bowling departments.
Sources also said the PCB has made it clear that financial benefits will now be linked to performance. Additionally, the board is reportedly considering a squad overhaul, which could include dropping key players such as Babar Azam from the T20 squad.
Younis concluded that while performance accountability is important, punishing players with hefty fines is not the solution. Instead, nurturing talent and giving players confidence can help improve Pakistan’s future performances on the global stage.
