T20 World Cup 2024: Bangladesh secures Super 8s spot with victory over Nepal

Bangladesh advanced to the Super Eights of the T20 World Cup after securing a 21-run victory over Nepal on Sunday, ensuring their progression to the next round.

Despite struggling with the bat on a difficult pitch at Arnos Vale, Bangladesh managed to post 106 all out in 19.3 overs. A brilliant spell of 4-7 from pace bowler Tanzim Hasan Sakib left Nepal in trouble at 26-5 during their chase.

Although Nepal mounted a recovery, a crucial 3-7 spell from left-arm seamer Mustafizur Rahman, including a wicket maiden in the penultimate over, sealed the victory as Nepal were bowled out for 85 in 19.2 overs.

Bangladesh finished second in Group D, behind South Africa, and will join Afghanistan, India, and Australia in Group 1 of the Super Eights.

“We are very happy with our performance in the qualifying round and hope to continue our strong bowling in the next round, although our batting needs improvement,” said Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto.

“Tanzim’s spell through the top order was outstanding, supported by left-arm pace, leg spin, and slow left-arm spin,” he added.

“We have a well-rounded attack. Over the past few years, our fast bowlers have worked incredibly hard, leading to our good performance here. In this format, the bowling unit is crucial, and I hope they maintain their form,” he said.
