Apple Unveils First Modem Chip to Reduce Reliance on Qualcomm

Apple has introduced its first custom-designed modem chip, reducing its dependence on Qualcomm for iPhone connectivity. The chip debuts in the new iPhone 16e, part of Apple’s C1 subsystem, enhancing battery life and AI features.

Apple’s modem, tested with 180 carriers across 55 countries, integrates tightly with the A18 processor to optimize network performance. However, it lacks millimeter-wave 5G support, a Qualcomm stronghold.

While Qualcomm expects its modem share in iPhones to drop significantly by next year, Apple aims to refine its platform for future models.
