OpenAI, the parent company of ChatGPT, will open its first office in New Delhi later this year. This marks a major step in expanding its presence in India, the platform’s second-largest market by user numbers.
The company, backed by Microsoft, has officially registered as a legal entity in India. OpenAI has also begun hiring a local team to support its operations.
“Opening our first office and building a local team is an important first step,” said OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. He added this move shows the company’s commitment to making advanced AI more accessible across India.
India is a crucial market for OpenAI. The company recently launched its cheapest monthly ChatGPT plan at $4.60 to reach nearly one billion internet users. OpenAI’s weekly active users in India have quadrupled over the past year, with a large proportion being students.
However, OpenAI faces legal challenges in India. Some news outlets and book publishers have accused the company of using their content without permission to train ChatGPT. OpenAI has denied any wrongdoing and continues to engage with local stakeholders.
The company also faces strong competition from rivals like Google’s Gemini and AI startup Perplexity. Both competitors offer free access to advanced AI tools for many users in India. Despite this, OpenAI’s popularity continues to grow rapidly, driven by affordable pricing and a strong user base.
With its new office, OpenAI aims to strengthen its local operations, hire talent, and develop AI solutions tailored for India.
The expansion is expected to improve service delivery and increase engagement among Indian users, highlighting the country’s growing importance in the global AI landscape.
