Nvidia H20 Chips ‘Not Safe’ for China: State Media

Nvidia H20 Chips ‘Not Safe’ for China State Media

Chinese state-linked media has raised fresh concerns about the safety of Nvidia H20 chips, warning they may contain a hardware “backdoor” capable of remote shutdown.

The warning came from Yuyuan Tantian, a social media account affiliated with state broadcaster CCTV, in a WeChat post on Sunday. The article described the Nvidia H20 chips as “neither environmentally friendly, nor technologically advanced, nor safe,” and advised Chinese consumers against buying them.

The Nvidia H20 chips were designed for the Chinese market after the United States imposed restrictions on exporting advanced AI chips in late 2023. The administration of former U.S. President Donald Trump initially banned the sale of these chips in April 2025 but later lifted the ban in July.

On July 31, China’s Cyberspace Administration called Nvidia in for discussions over alleged security risks linked to potential “backdoor” access.

Nvidia has firmly rejected the claims, stating there are no hidden access points or remote control functions in the H20 chips. The company repeated this assurance on Sunday in response to the latest media report.

The renewed criticism echoes concerns raised earlier this month by People’s Daily, China’s main state-run newspaper. That report urged Nvidia to provide strong and verifiable evidence proving the security of its products to regain trust in the Chinese market.

The dispute over Nvidia H20 chips underscores rising tensions between the U.S. and China in the technology sector, especially in artificial intelligence hardware.

While Chinese authorities push for tighter scrutiny of foreign tech products, Nvidia continues to defend the integrity and safety of its AI chips in an increasingly competitive market.
