A massive Ford recall has been issued for 1,448,655 vehicles across the United States due to a malfunctioning rearview camera that may display distorted, intermittent, or blank images when reversing, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced on Wednesday.
The safety recall affects several popular Ford models, including the Explorer, Escape, Mustang, Flex, and Fiesta, as well as certain Lincoln vehicles. The faulty camera issue may reduce rear visibility, increasing the risk of a collision while backing up.
According to the NHTSA, Ford dealers will inspect and replace the rearview camera components where necessary, with all repairs provided at no cost to vehicle owners.
The problem is linked to a potential electrical or image-processing failure within the camera module, which can result in poor or no image transmission to the vehicleโs display screen. Although no major injuries or accidents have yet been reported, the issue poses a safety concern for drivers.

The Ford recall reflects ongoing scrutiny by U.S. regulators regarding vehicle technology and safety features, particularly as cameras and sensors play a greater role in modern driving systems. Rearview cameras have been mandatory in new vehicles sold in the U.S. since 2018 to help prevent back-over crashes.
Owners of affected vehicles are expected to receive official notification letters with detailed instructions on scheduling inspections and replacements. Ford encourages customers to contact their local dealer or visit the companyโs recall website to confirm whether their vehicle is included in the campaign.
This is one of the largest Ford recalls of the year, underscoring the companyโs continued efforts to address safety issues promptly and maintain consumer confidence in its vehicles.
