Google has initiated substantial staff reductions, affecting over a thousand employees across various departments since January 10th, and according to CEO Sundar Pichai, more cuts may be in store. Pichai conveyed this message in an internal memo, highlighting the company’s ambitious goals and commitment to investing in key priorities for the upcoming year. However, he also acknowledged the necessity of making “tough choices” as part of this investment strategy.
The impact of these “tough choices” has already been felt through layoffs and reorganizations across critical areas within Google, including hardware, ad sales, search, shopping, maps, policy, core engineering, and YouTube. Pichai clarified that these role eliminations are not on the same scale as last year’s reductions and won’t affect every team. Nevertheless, he acknowledged the difficulty of witnessing colleagues and teams being impacted.
