Meta Tightens Safety Rules for Teen Users Across Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger

Meta Tightens Safety Rules for Teen Users Across Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger

Meta has introduced new and stricter safety restrictions for underage users across its major platforms. These include Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger. The move is aimed at improving online protection for teenagers worldwide.

According to the official statement, Meta is rolling out stronger controls for โ€œTeen Accounts.โ€ These accounts apply to users aged 13 and above. The company said the update focuses on safer online experiences.

From June 2, the new safety rules are being enforced globally. Meta confirmed that the updated settings apply to younger users across all its platforms. The changes are part of a wider effort to improve digital safety.

The update was first introduced in October 2026. It initially rolled out in the United States, Australia, the United Kingdom, and Canada. Now, Meta is expanding these protections to users worldwide.

The company also announced cooperation with a safety organisation called โ€œAllice.โ€ Together, they will test and develop new tools designed specifically for underage users. This partnership aims to strengthen online safety features further.

Under the new policy, teen users will face stricter content restrictions. Meta said that accounts frequently sharing inappropriate content will no longer be visible to minors. These accounts will also be removed from recommendations and search results for users under 18.

In earlier updates introduced in October, Instagram also added similar protections. These include limits on sensitive search terms, especially those related to harmful or inappropriate content such as alcohol.

Another important feature is the โ€œLimited Contentโ€ setting. This allows parents to control what teens can see online. It also includes options to restrict comments and prevent minors from viewing comments on their own posts.

Meta said these updates are part of its ongoing commitment to online safety. The company emphasized that protecting young users remains a top priority.

With these changes, Meta aims to create a safer digital environment. The new restrictions are expected to reduce exposure to harmful content and improve parental control options.
