The Punjab government has officially made it mandatory for all new petrol pumps across the province to install electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, marking a major policy shift toward cleaner transportation and sustainable energy use.
According to officials, this directive is part of Punjab’s broader strategy to encourage EV adoption and tackle the worsening air pollution crisis in urban centers, especially Lahore, which frequently ranks among the world’s most polluted cities.
Lahore’s Air Quality Index (AQI) has often remained in the “very unhealthy” or “hazardous” categories, prompting authorities to take urgent action. By integrating EV charging facilities into new fuel stations, the government hopes to make electric mobility more accessible and gradually reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
An official from the provincial energy department said the move will “pave the way for an EV-friendly ecosystem” by ensuring that new petrol pumps provide dual infrastructure—both for conventional and electric vehicles.
In addition to environmental benefits, this initiative aligns with Punjab’s economic goals. With rising fuel prices placing financial strain on consumers, EVs are being promoted as a cost-effective and sustainable alternative for daily commuting.
Authorities are expected to release detailed guidelines soon, explaining the technical and regulatory requirements for petrol pump operators to comply with the new policy.
The decision is being welcomed by environmental activists and EV industry stakeholders, who believe it could accelerate Pakistan’s transition to green mobility and contribute to achieving national sustainability targets.
