Starlink satellite technology can help smartphones stay connected when mobile signals disappear, but a recent hands-on test suggests it is still best used as a backup rather than a replacement for 4G or 5G networks.
The findings come from a real-world test conducted by Tom’s Guide in the United Kingdom. The publication tested O2 Satellite using a Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra to evaluate how direct-to-phone satellite connectivity performs in everyday conditions.
O2’s satellite service is powered by Starlink satellites. Eligible customers can subscribe to the feature for £3 per month, while it is included in selected mobile plans.
According to O2, users do not need additional hardware or a separate satellite application. Compatible smartphones can automatically switch to satellite connectivity when mobile coverage is unavailable.
The company explained that the service works alongside its regular mobile network. Phones continue using cellular service or Wi-Fi whenever available.
When both options disappear, the device automatically connects to Starlink satellites as a backup communication method. O2 also recommends using the feature outdoors with a clear view of the sky for the best results.
During the test, the reviewer had difficulty finding an area without mobile coverage because O2’s network was strong across much of southeast England. Eventually, a mobile dead zone located about 30 minutes away was selected.
By the time the vehicle reached the location, the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra had already established a satellite connection.
Tom’s Guide reported that the phone maintained its connection even while inside a car without a sunroof. The signal initially showed one out of three bars.
After holding the phone outside, the signal strength improved to two bars within about a minute. However, it never reached the maximum three-bar signal despite open surroundings.
The test also highlighted the limitations of indoor satellite connectivity. When the reviewer entered a centuries-old pub with a thick thatched roof, the satellite signal disappeared completely.
Google Maps remained functional through the satellite connection, although performance was slower than a normal mobile network. It took around 30 to 60 seconds for maps to load completely.
Loading times improved when the phone was used outdoors. Even then, the connection remained noticeably slower than standard 4G and 5G services.
Another major limitation involved app compatibility. O2 said its satellite service currently supports messaging, WhatsApp, Messenger, maps, location sharing, and weather services.
During the test, Google Maps, Messages, Google Find Hub, and weather applications worked successfully. However, web browsers, streaming platforms, and many social media apps did not function over the satellite connection.
Tom’s Guide concluded that Starlink satellite connectivity is valuable in remote areas where mobile coverage is unavailable. However, slower speeds, limited indoor performance, and restricted app support mean it cannot yet replace traditional cellular networks.

As satellite communication technology continues to expand, companies are working to improve coverage and functionality. For now, direct-to-phone satellite service remains most useful when users have no other way to stay connected.
