Suzuki has unveiled its First Electric kei car, the e-Sky, for the Japanese market.
The compact battery-powered vehicle focuses on efficiency, low weight and urban driving. Suzuki plans to launch the e-Sky in Japan in November.
The First Electric kei car marks an important step for Suzuki. The company is expanding into Japan’s growing electric urban mobility segment.
The e-Sky uses a 26 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery. Suzuki estimates that the vehicle can travel around 310 kilometers on one charge.
The company claims energy consumption of about 12 kilometers per kWh. This makes the e-Sky an efficiency-focused option among compact electric vehicles.
Suzuki developed a dedicated lightweight platform for the new model. The company did not simply convert an existing petrol-powered vehicle into an EV.
The battery is positioned underneath the floor. This design helps improve packaging and supports the vehicle’s aerodynamic efficiency.
The e-Sky also features Suzuki’s first in-house designed electric axle system. The compact powertrain has been developed primarily for city driving.
Suzuki has focused on efficiency instead of high performance. The lightweight construction allows the company to use a relatively small battery.
The First Electric model also supports DC fast charging. Its charging system can accept power of up to 50 kW.
Suzuki estimates that the battery can reach 80 percent charge in around 25 minutes. This feature could make the vehicle more practical for daily urban use.
AC charging is also available for home and slower charging environments. A 3 kW charger requires around eight hours for a full charge.
A 6 kW charger can reduce the charging time to approximately 4.5 hours. These options provide flexibility for different charging requirements.
The e-Sky comes with several features designed specifically for electric driving. These include a heat pump and one-pedal driving.
The vehicle also supports bidirectional charging technology. This allows electricity to potentially flow between the vehicle and compatible systems.
Inside, the compact EV features a digital instrument cluster. It also gets a large 10.1-inch touchscreen display.
Other cabin features include a heated steering wheel and electronic parking brake. Suzuki has also focused on practical use of the available interior space.
The cabin includes a two-level center console for additional storage. A passenger-side tray also includes an integrated cup holder.
Suzuki has not announced the e-Sky’s price yet. However, affordability remains one of the company’s key development priorities.
The First Electric kei car is scheduled to go on sale in Japan later this year. Suzuki has also considered potential international markets.
The automaker has not confirmed specific export plans. Further details could emerge closer to the vehicle’s Japanese launch.
