The White House has decided to block Nvidia from selling its latest AI chip to China, according to a report by The Information. The move marks another tightening of U.S. restrictions on the export of advanced artificial intelligence technology to Chinese companies.
The report stated that Nvidia had provided samples of the new AI chip, known as the B30A, to several customers in China. The B30A is a scaled-down version of Nvidia’s high-performance processors and is capable of training large language models when used in powerful data center clusters.
However, the U.S. government informed federal agencies that Nvidia will not be allowed to sell the AI chip in China, even in its modified form. The decision aims to limit China’s access to advanced computing hardware that could be used for artificial intelligence and military applications.
In response, an Nvidia spokesperson told Reuters that the company currently has “zero share in China’s highly competitive market for datacenter compute, and do not include it in our guidance.”
According to The Information, Nvidia is now working to adjust the design of the B30A in hopes of meeting U.S. export requirements. Two employees familiar with the project said the company may submit the modified chip for review.
At the same time, Nvidia faces growing challenges in China. Beijing recently issued new guidelines requiring all state-funded data centers to use only domestically developed chips. Projects that are less than 30% complete must remove or cancel foreign chip purchases, while ongoing projects will be reviewed individually.
These rules effectively block Nvidia and its AI chip lineup from one of the world’s largest markets for data processing and machine learning. Despite these setbacks, Nvidia continues to explore ways to maintain a presence in China while adhering to U.S. export laws.
