Previously, WhatsApp contacts were stored only on users’ phones. Now, this update allows seamless access across devices, including WhatsApp Web and Windows. It also offers the option to sync contacts with mobile devices, enhancing convenience.
The new feature introduces Identity Proof Linked Storage (IPLS) for encrypted and secure contact storage, developed with Cloudflare’s support to ensure data integrity. Additionally, WhatsApp plans to let users save contacts by usernames, offering a layer of privacy similar to rivals like Signal and Telegram.
