WhatsApp Voice, Video Calls Return to Saudi Arabia After Six-Year Break

WhatsApp

WhatsApp users in Saudi Arabia can now make voice and video calls again after a six-year hiatus. The features had been blocked since 2019 due to regulatory reasons, but their reactivation has raised questions about the long-term availability of these services.

The unannounced restoration of voice and video calls aligns with Saudi Arabia’s ongoing efforts to improve its telecommunications infrastructure. Technology expert Abdullah Al-Subaei suggests this move could enhance digital communication in the country.

WhatsApp, which introduced voice calls in 2015 and video calls in 2016, had previously faced restrictions in the Kingdom due to regulatory policies. The sudden return of these services has sparked discussions about the future of digital communication in Saudi Arabia, but no official statement has confirmed whether the change is permanent.

Additionally, Saudi Arabia has become the top destination for Pakistani travelers, with a significant increase in annual visits, particularly during religious periods like Ramadan. The country’s tourism industry, boosted by mega-projects like NEOM and The Red Sea Project, continues to grow under Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, positioning it as a prime global tourist destination.
