Social media platform X is introducing a new monetization system for creators worldwide.
The new system is called the Original Content Rewards Program. It aims to reward creators who produce original material. The platform is also taking steps against copied, stolen and low-quality content.
According to a notification sent to creators, the change will replace the existing Ads Revenue Sharing Program. The move could significantly change how creators earn money from content posted on the platform.
X Sets September 8 Launch for New Program
According to the announced schedule, the existing Ads Revenue Sharing Program ends on September 7, 2026.
Applications for the Original Content Rewards Program will open on September 8, 2026. Creators who have already completed identity verification will not need to repeat the process.
The same applies to users who have already connected an eligible payment method. Creators can check their eligibility status through Creator Studio.
The new system puts greater emphasis on original content when determining monetization opportunities.
New Program Targets Copied Content
The change comes amid concerns about increasing amounts of recycled material on social media platforms. Since monetization became available on X, some accounts have focused heavily on generating high volumes of posts.
This strategy often aims to increase engagement and maximize potential revenue.
In some cases, accounts reportedly began uploading clips taken from live television broadcasts. These clips could appear on the platform shortly after being aired.
Other accounts downloaded popular videos from TikTok, Facebook and Instagram before reposting them. Some creators apparently believed cross-platform reposting could help them avoid copyright detection.
This practice also allowed accounts to benefit from content originally produced by others.
Original Content to Get More Focus
The growing volume of recycled material has raised questions about content quality and originality.
Users can often encounter the same viral videos across several social media platforms.
The new Original Content Rewards Program appears designed to change those incentives. Creators producing their own videos, commentary and other material could benefit more under the updated system.
Meanwhile, accounts relying heavily on copied content may find monetization more difficult.
The changes could particularly affect markets where reposting viral material has become a common engagement strategy. Pakistan is among the markets where concerns have emerged about high volumes of recycled content.
With its new rewards system, X is shifting its monetization strategy toward original creators. The transition begins after the existing revenue-sharing program ends on September 7.
