Ten dead as navy helicopters collide mid-air in Malaysia

Two Malaysian navy helicopters collided mid-air during a rehearsal for a military parade, resulting in the tragic deaths of all 10 crew members.

The collision occurred as the helicopters were flying in formation, with one aircraft clipping the rotor of the other before both crashed to the ground. Footage of the incident, captured by local media, showed the harrowing moment of impact.

The tragic event unfolded at 09:30 local time in Lumut, Malaysia, the site of a Royal Malaysian Navy base. Despite immediate response efforts, there were no survivors.

The Royal Malaysian Navy confirmed that all victims were pronounced dead at the scene, and their remains were transported to the Lumut Military Hospital for identification. An investigative committee will be formed to determine the cause of the collision.

One of the helicopters, a HOM M503-3 carrying seven individuals, crashed onto a nearby running track, while the other, a Fennec M502-6 with three crew members, collided into a swimming pool in the vicinity.

The state’s fire and rescue department was alerted to the incident at 09:50 local time. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim expressed condolences to the victims’ families and extended prayers for strength in coping with the tragedy.

This incident comes after a Malaysian coast guard helicopter crash in March, where the pilot, co-pilot, and two passengers were rescued after their aircraft went down into the sea off Angsa Island during a training flight.
