Karachi Airport On High Alert Due To Heavy Rain Forecast

On Monday, the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) issued a rain alert for Karachi Airport due to forecasted rain in the provincial capital. This alert involves close monitoring of the runway and surrounding areas over the next 24 hours. Small jets have been directed to relocate to safe positions, secure their wings with weights, and address concerns about insects and birds on the runway because of the wet conditions.

The aviation authority has also deployed additional bird shooters and is reinforcing tarmac joints with electric cables to prevent accidents during the anticipated downpour. Staff have been instructed to clear water drains on the runways.

This precautionary measure comes as the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) predicts increased rainfall, along with wind and thundershowers, across several regions starting this week. PMD’s advisory notes that weak monsoon currents from the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal are advancing into upper and central Pakistan and are expected to strengthen from Monday.

Additionally, a low-pressure system is forming in the Bay of Bengal and may affect Sindh, potentially leading to heavy rainfall in Karachi from Monday. The Met Office has urged all relevant authorities to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to mitigate any issues.
