India Expected to Release Water into Sutlej River Soon; PDMA Issues Flood Alert

The Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a flood alert for the Sutlej River and its connected streams.

This warning comes as India may release water into the river within the next 72 hours. The possible water release, combined with discharge from upstream reservoirs, could increase water flow and cause low-level flooding at Ganda Singh Wala.

PDMA Director General Irfan Ali Kathia reported that water levels in several Indian dams have risen sharply over the past week. The Bhakra Dam is now 61 percent full, Pong Dam stands at 76 percent, and Thein Dam is at 64 percent capacity. These increased levels raise concerns for downstream areas in Pakistan.

Officials in Punjab have taken the warning seriously. Commissioners of Lahore, Sahiwal, Bahawalpur, Multan, and Dera Ghazi Khan are on alert. Deputy commissioners from Kasur, Okara, Pakpattan, Bahawalnagar, Vehari, Lodhran, Bahawalpur, Multan, Muzaffargarh, Rajanpur, and Rahim Yar Khan have also been notified to stay vigilant.

The PDMA, along with the Indus River System Authority (IRSA) and the irrigation department, is closely monitoring the situation. They are working around the clock to track water levels and manage flood risks.

Other departments, including local government, agriculture, health, forestry, livestock, and transport, have received alerts. Emergency control rooms are staffed 24/7, and Rescue 1122 disaster teams are on high alert.

The public has been advised to follow safety guidelines strictly. People should avoid swimming in rivers, canals, streams, and ponds during this time.

Authorities urge citizens to cooperate fully in case evacuation becomes necessary. For emergencies, people can contact the PDMA helpline at 1129.

This flood alert highlights the ongoing impact of water management and river flow changes between India and Pakistan. Both sides continue to monitor the situation closely to prevent harm to communities along the Sutlej River.
