The Provincial Ombudsperson for Sindh, Justice (R) Shahnawaz Tariq, has delivered a significant verdict in a workplace harassment case involving K-Electric.
The case concerns allegations made by Meherin Zehra, a former Chief Marketing Consultant at K-Electric, who accused the company’s CEO, Moonis Alvi, of harassment and mental torture during her tenure in 2019.
The Ombudsperson concluded that the allegations were credible and proven, leading to a strong legal response. As a result, Moonis Alvi has been ordered to step down from his position as CEO of K-Electric.
In addition to his dismissal, Alvi has been fined Rs2.5 million, which he must pay within a month.
The ruling also includes strict consequences for non-compliance. If Alvi fails to pay the fine within the designated timeframe, the order allows for the seizure of his movable and immovable properties.
Moreover, the Ombudsperson’s verdict also provides for the blocking of his national identity card and passport.
This case highlights a growing effort to address workplace harassment issues in Pakistan, particularly in large corporations like K-Electric. Meherin Zehra, who filed the original complaint, has expressed relief that her accusations were taken seriously and resulted in a formal ruling.
The decision marks a significant step forward in enforcing workplace harassment laws in Pakistan, setting a precedent for other organizations to follow.
With K-Electric now facing legal consequences, this case underscores the importance of maintaining a safe and respectful work environment for all employees.
This verdict against K-Electric’s CEO serves as a reminder of the need for stringent policies and regulations to prevent workplace harassment across corporate sectors in Pakistan.
